Resources for Teachers
Jane is a social studies teacher at a high school in the Midwest. She remembers the day that pornography violated the safe zone of her classroom. “I am the advisor for our school’s Gay Straight Alliance,” she explains, “and this club is definitely not the best supported by the general school population. The students in the GSA really look out for one another and support each other through all of the harassment and intolerance they endure.” One day, even this support wasn’t enough; the students of the GSA were targeted. Jane recalls, “Apparently, someone had made flyer reproductions of gay porn and Photoshopped my students’ faces into the images. These images were being passed along, it was a big running joke. I have never seen my students more violated or hurt in their lives, and several had to undergo extensive counseling to move past this incident.”
